Breakout Session Description

How can we bring cost-effective, personalized medicine from academia into cancer therapies for the public? We'll discuss how to enhance clinical research and enable patient treatments through an integrated model that involves all players (Sponsors, Payers, Providers and Patients).

Full Description: Healthcare costs are increasing at an unsustainable pace, impacting the global economy. Cancer is now the primary cause of mortality & morbidity in the US and is responsible for nearly 10% of healthcare spending and projected to grow 62% by 2020. The biopharmaceutical industry has evolved and cancer is now defined by biochemical pathways & genetic markers. However, personalized medicine is reserved for academia and is largely absent from community health care. More accurate diagnostics to select efficacious therapies for individuals are critical in reducing costs and improving outcomes. Bringing these principles to cancer patients by developing additional collaborations between academia, research & clinicians is essential. This session will focus on developing an integrated model involving all players (Sponsors, Payers, Providers, Patients) to enhance clinical research and enable optimal cost-effective treatment strategies tailored to the patient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate the integrated model and judge how it can be incorporated into practice.
  • Gauge the value of integrating clinical/tumor genetic data in a structured format for practice decision tools.
  • Evaluate the impact of targeted therapeutics on clinical research and payer systems.
